Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a widespread virus affecting both males and females, often without symptoms. It can lead to cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females, anal cancer, certain head and neck cancers, such as throat and back of mouth cancers, and genital warts in both males and females. HPV spreads through sexual contact, even from asymptomatic carriers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Symptoms of cervical cancer include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding following intercourse, or in between periods or after menopause
  • Watery, bloody vaginal discharge that may be heavy and have a foul smell
  • Lower abdominal pain or pain during intercourse
  • HPV infection is very common in men and women.
  • It can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact such as sexual activity
  • Very rarely, during delivery from an infected mother to her baby
  • HPV cannot be spread by sitting on toilet seats or touching common surfaces.
  • Clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance have shown that HPV vaccines are safe and effective in preventing infections with selected HPV types.
  • The vaccines do not contain any live viruses or infectious material. This means you cannot become infected with HPV from the vaccines.
  • Current evidence shows sustained protection against vaccine-targeted HPV-related diseases in long-term follow-up studies for the HPV vaccines.
  • There is currently no recommendation for additional doses or booster shots.
  • Cevarix vaccination is nationally recommended in Singapore for females aged 9 to 26 who wish to prevent HPV infection and reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer.
  • If your daughter is above 26 years old or your son is aged 9 and above and wishes to receive the HPV vaccination, do speak with our doctors to find out how it may benefit your child.
  • The HPV vaccine is most effective in protecting against the selected HPV types if given prior to exposure to HPV through sexual activity.
  • Cervarix provides protection against HPV types 16 and 18, which account for 70% of all cervical cancers, and have been shown to be both clinically- and cost-effective in the local setting for females.
  • Gardasil 9 provides protection against an additional 20% of cancer-causing HPV types. It is clinically effective for both females and males. Individual males who feel that they are at high risk of contracting HPV may opt for vaccination.

  • For all nationally recommended vaccinations, including HPV vaccination, MediSave can be used to offset the remaining co-payment, if any.
  • Please contact our clinics directly for eligibility for subsidies, the costs of vaccinations, and the use of MediSave.
  • The HPV vaccine may not be suitable for you if you have had severe allergic reaction, after a previous dose of the vaccine, or to any of the vaccine components, including yeast.
  • If you have a moderate or severe acute infectious illness, please wait until you have recovered from the illness.
  • HPV vaccines are not recommended for pregnant women.

Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache and fever are common side effects. They are expected to resolve on their own or anti-fever medicines or painkillers may help with the pain, headache and fever.

The symptoms of a drug allergy may include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

Preventing Cervical Cancer through Regular Screening​

Recommended tests:

  • PAP Smear (ThinPrep): Females, aged between 25 and 29
  • HPV test: Females, aged 30 years and above
Enjoy Health Promotion Board’s Screen for Life (SFL) subsidised cervical cancer screening at One Wellness Medical Clinics at $5 or less for eligible patients. Non-eligible patients can get screened from $42.50 before GST.
